Common Zapier error codes

Error code
What it means
Example
400
Bad request
The information sent to the app was sent in the wrong format e.g. the app was expecting a number and received text
401
Unauthorised
The app credentials used weren’t correct/aren’t working
403
Forbidden
The account connected to the app doesn’t have permission to do what you’re asking the app to do.
404
Not found
There can be a few different reasons for this. It means that when the app tried to do the task that Zapier asked, it couldn’t find something that it needed. e.g. You asked it to update an Account in a CRM and it couldn’t find the account.
504
Timeout
It took too long to try and do what the Zap was asking, so the app stopped trying.

Putting the wrong type of information in a Zap step
Other than permission issues, the most common reason that a Zap step will hit an error is the wrong type of data being entered into a field. For example, you enter the word “Yes” in a field that is expecting a ‘boolean’ True or False response. If you’d like to learn more about the different types of fields that you might find in the Zapier editor, check out this Zapier help guide.

Using the right information in a dropdown field
This type of error happens a lot if you’re trying to map dynamic data (information that will be different depending on the data that comes from a previous step) in a dropdown field.

An example Zapier error
Learning how to read error messages can be a great help in problem-solving errors in your Zap. Let’s take a look at an example.
![An error message from the Zapier editor. It has a light red background and white cross in a dark red circle in the top left corner. The error message says: Failed to create an account in Freshsales Suite Error from halted execution:{"error":{"code":400, "message":["Either the lookup value for Primary contact is invalid or you don't have permission to access it."]}} Click on the Troubleshoot tab below or learn more in our help centre. In the message, the words "Troubleshoot" and "help centre" are hyperlinked.](https://t37413820.p.clickup-attachments.com/t37413820/5af89f33-56dc-4d45-af7d-cf501d6d1152/image.png)
How to find help
There’s no way for us to cover every error you might come across in your Zaps, and if you’re looking for some more support, here are some places you can look for answers:
- The Zapier help pages – guides on how to use Zapier, as well as some app-specific information.
- Zapier learn – Zapier’s free courses on using Zapier and how to make the most of it.
- The Zapier Community – Zapier’s user community, you can search other users’ questions or post your own.
Summary
When you’re building a Zap, you may find that your Zap steps run into errors. Many of these errors relate to app account connections or the type of data in the fields of the Zap step. Either way, you can follow these steps to help you get unstuck:
- Read the Zap error message – does it include an error code? Does it tell you which fields are causing the error?
- Check that the connect app account has the permissions it needs to perform the action in the Zap
- Check the fields of the Zap action to make sure that the right type of information is in the action’s fields.
- Search relevant resources for help or clues
